Sri Lanka wood pigeon (Columba torringtoniae)

Sinhala: මයිලගොයා[Manilagoya]

Sri Lanka wood pigeon is an endemic species of birds found mostly in the highlands of Sri Lanka. Horton national park is a common place to observe this bird. Above photo was taken at Knuckles mountain range.

Green Imperial Pigeon(Ducula aenea)


English : Green Imperial Pigeon
Binomial Name : Ducula aenea
Sinhala : නීල මහගොයා [Neela maha goya]
A bird distributed in tropical southern Asia from India east to Indonesia including Sri Lanka. Number of sub species exist and the one found in Sri Lanka is D. a. pusilla. This arboreal bird is named as a forest bird and can be seen in canopy layer of forests. They mainly feed on plant material of forest canopy.

Spotted dove (Spilopelia chinensis / Streptopelia chinensis)


English : Spotted dove
Binomial Name : Spilopelia chinensis / Streptopelia chinensis
Sinhala Name : අළු කොබෙයියා [Alu Kobeyya]
A bird lives in Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia including Sri Lanka. Few Sub species of this bird have been identified and the very common sub species found in Sri Lanka is S. c. ceylonensis. They have been distributed in all environmental regions in the country.

Emerald Dove (Chalcophaps indica subsp. robinsoni)


English : Emerald Dove / Bronze-wing Pigeon / Green Dove
Binomial Name : Chalcophaps indica subsp. robinsoni
Sinhala : නීල කොබෙයියා [Neela Kobeyya]
It is a resident breeder of Sri Lanka with brilliant green wings. They feed on fallen fruits and seeds. Even though there are number of subspecies of C. indica in the world, the one who lives in Sri lanka is C.i. subsp. robinsoni.
